Dirty Money

Dirty Money was a UK band around circa 2007-10. In their time, they became one of the most successful UK hardcore bands ever. They put out a split 7" with Trapped Under Ice on A389 Records, and toured the US in 2009. They then played their last show in London to a packed out Camden Underworld back in May 2010, which was pretty much the most insane reception that I have seen a UK band get, either before or since.

I recently grabbed this limited cover version of their debut 7" on Dead & Gone Records, numbered out of 50 copies. I once saw this one sell for a shedload of money. I guess everyone is prepared to pay good money for a bit of Kate Moss.

Unlucky for some, number 13 out of 50.

I think there are at least two other limited sleeve versions of this one, but I'm happy enough to only own this one. I mean, is there anything more British than Kate Moss? Great cover, great record.

Take Effect

You know how sometimes you don't know that you want something until you see a picture of it somewhere? Yeah, well, that. Someone I'm following on instagram posted up a green vinyl copy of the Fuel 'Take Effect' 7" on Lookout! Records. Now, I haven't listened to this band for some time, but that photo brought them right back into my world with a bang. I then needed to grab one for myself, which wasn't actually too difficult.

Fuel were a band active in the early 90s in the Bay Area. This 7" came out on Lookout! Records, they had a couple of split 7"s on Allied Recordings and a full length that was released by Rough Trade. They sounded a lot like Fugazi. I remember when I started getting into this kind of stuff, Fuel were a band that were loved by everyone. I'm not sure why exactly, but they seemed to have that magic ingredient that meant that they clicked with everyone - pop punkers, hardcore kids, and the political and emo scene too. After listening to them and writing this, I have to wonder exactly why they called it a day.

I already own this 7" on clear. There's also a red vinyl copy out there too which I am now looking for. BUT IT'S NOT UP FOR SALE!

Front Porch Stories

Another band I have been listening to recently after not listening to them for a while is Avail. I posted up a picture of their 'Live At The Kings Head Inn' 10" for the 'january record a day' thing on instagram, and that was enough to get me playing their stuff for a few days afterwards. I then realised that I had never owned, or even heard, their final LP 'Front Porch Stories'. So I went out looking for one. It didn't take too long either.

This came out on Fat Wreck Chords in 2002. There were only 218 copies pressed on red vinyl, and despite never hearing it, it's been on my want list for a few years. I never wanted one bad enough to pay the required price. It sells for a bit as it's Fat Wreck color vinyl, and there are some kids who collect that stuff. But with this being the year of the wants list attack, I figured I would take one when I saw it.

I have to say, I have struggled to get into this one so far. It just hasn't really grabbed me yet. Having said that, I've only listened to it twice. Hopefully it will grow on me as much as the rest of the band's catalogue.

I Am Live II

The day after my birthday this year, I woke up to an email from a friend letting me know that there was a new, red vinyl pressing of the Give 'I Am Live' 7" available to order. However, at the point I woke up, the email was already over 7 hours old, and it mentioned that there were only 45 copies in existence. I therefore assumed that when I followed the link to the Photobooth Records store, that it would already be sold out. I mean, Give are pretty hot right now. The US pressing of their LP sold out insanely quickly, so I figured 7 hours would be more than enough for 45 Give fans to add a 7" to their carts and check out. Fortunately, I was wrong and I was able to place an order.

After I successfully placed an order, I could relax. I then did my bit to help my fellow nerds out, so I emailed the link out to people who I thought would appreciate it. I think that they all managed to get one too. I'm not sure how long the records were in stock for, but it was cool how this came about and that a circle of record nerds were able to help each other out. Go nerds!

I Am 7

Wow. Time really does fly. It was 7 years ago today that I started this blog.

Life has moved on a lot in 7 years, although in many ways everything is still the same. I think this blog gets less readers now than ever judging from the stats, but I'm ok with that. Thanks to anyone who still reads or comments though, it's appreciated.

Testicle Explosion

After partaking in the 'January record a day' thing on instagram, I've been listening to a lot of Two Line Filler. The band were my choice for day 5, for which the category was 'underrated artist'. After putting up a picture of their LP and first 7", it occurred to me that they had other records that I didn't own. So I went to discogs to see what I could get, and found this split 7" with Fadeaway for cheap. The Two Line Filler side has the worst cover of all time, as you can see:

I actually used to own this 7" on black vinyl, but traded it back in about 1999 or so for a Slugfest 7". I thought it was a good trade at the time, and it still seems like a good trade to me in the current climate.

This always seemed like an odd spit to me. Two Line Filler were a poppy punk style band, whilst Fadeaway were the epitome of 90s chugga chugga hardcore. They were from Buffalo and featured Scott Vogel on drums, as well as (I think) some dude from Snapcase doing something else. They had a CD out on Conquer The World Records, and this split 7". They were good. I wish CTW had pressed the album on vinyl as well as CD. No idea why they didn't, as the label did release a lot of vinyl back in those days.

This copy that I have just picked up comes on limited purple vinyl. It's not really visible in the photos above, so I took the obligatory photo of the record with the light behind it to prove that I'm not making it up.

This here represents what is good about the internet. When this came out in the mid 90s, I didn't even know that a purple vinyl copy existed, and even if I did it would have been impossible to find one. But to get this in 2015, all I had to do was go to discogs, click with my mouse a couple of times, pay a trivial amount of money that probably wouldn't even buy me lunch, and a few days later it was in my hands. It feels a lot more fun to buy low cost, forgotten rarities like this than paying big money for something that every man and his dog is chasing. I think I need more cheap gems like this in my life...

FP D1C DC/NJ

2015 is off to a good start. Here's another one of my wants bagged. This version of the Floorpunch 'Division One Champs' 7" is actually THE rarest version of them all. Yes, even rarer than the gold vinyl... although that one sells for 5-10 times as much. This is the DC/NJ pressing, made for a tour back in 1999. It has the same Judge rip off cover as the Euro tour press, but this version has regular labels on the record.

This version is a red stamp inside the sleeve and is numbered out of only 75 copies. This means that there are 13 fewer copies of this version than the gold one. I'm not exactly sure why this one sells for so much less, but I would say that it's because it's not too significantly different from the Euro tour press with Judge sleeve, and it's on black vinyl. If this version were on color wax, and had a cover which was different and unique, then I'm sure this one would go for a hell of a lot more.

It's funny, but now that I have this I'm only missing two variants, which are the regular black vinyl copies, both first and second press. I was never really into collecting regular copies, but I now feel kinda compelled to pick them up...

The Crew

If truth be told, I've never been the biggest 7 Seconds fan. Some of their stuff is good and some is a bit meh. But there's no denying that the first LP is an absolute classic. And there was one version that I always wanted but figured I would never own. So when one came up for sale recently I jumped at it.

'The Crew' was put out by BYO Records waaaaay back in 1984. At the time I was 9 years old and probably had no interest in music at all. Kinda weird to think that this LP is now over 30 years old.

This version that I've been searching for is on a dark, clear blue vinyl... although it's only really visible when you hold it up to the light. Otherwise it looks almost black, as these photos show. It's a very interesting colour for sure, and is also a very similar colour to the first Youth Of Today LP on Wishingwell. In fact, I'm sure I read somewhere once that the 'Break Down The Walls' layout took a lot of influence from this LP, so perhaps the vinyl itself did too.

Some people have speculated that this colour vinyl pressing was not intentional. Some cheap vinyl from back in the day appears to be clear brown, just because it is super thin, although some people would actually think that it was brown vinyl rather than black. I also have a Lincoln 7" in my collection which is not thin vinyl at all, but when held to the light is dark red in colour. I would guess that the Lincoln 7" is not supposed to be red, but by a similar token, I struggle to believe that this blue vinyl 7 Seconds LP came about by accident. If nothing else, the vinyl colour just so happens to match the cover. So I firmly believe that this was intentional. But regardless, who really cares? It's a great record on a great colour.

Bold on Pink

So this thing has been on my wants list forever. I put it on there years back when I learnt that it existed, but I have never really seriously gone after one. It's rare as hell anyway, so rarely pops up for sale. But every time it did materialise, the price seemed to be too high, and at a level I considered ridiculous. But as I have got older, this has been the one Revelation variant that I have grown more and more intent on owning. I actually thought I would never get one, but this year I have decided that I need to make a big dent in my want list, so when one appeared for sale at the start of the year, I decided to make a serious play for it. A fierce auction ensued, and I don't want to go into the detail, but let's just say that it went worked out well in the end, and after a nervous couple of weeks waiting for the post office to get their asses in gear, it finally showed up in great shape.

In case you're not familiar with the story on this one, here's what the Rev discography has to say on the matter:

1st press : 3900 black vinyl, 1000 orange vinyl, 60 pink vinyl, orange/pink mixed vinyl
The color vinyl was suppose to be maroon, to match the cover, but the pressing plant couldn't mix the color properly and came up with pink. After pressing a number of the pink they stopped and tried remixing the color, this time coming up with orange. To make life easier Jordan just had them do the 1000 on orange so the mix was created when changing from pink to orange without cleaning the presses. The actual invoice states 60 on pink and makes no mention of the mix, so how many of the pure pink versus how many of the orange pink mix exist is not known, but it is safe to say that that there are more than 10 of the mix as was originally believed. What is more, did the mix of colors count as orange or pink on the invoice? So are there 60 pure pink and a number of the mix color, or are there a even fewer pure pink and a large number of mixed? To add insult to injury, the mix as been referred to as swirl when actually the pure pink, mix, and orange are all technically swirls. The only way to tell is by comparing colors.

I've had an orange copy of this thing for 20+ years now, so I pulled it out for comparison. It really does highlight the colour difference.

With this, the Sick Of It All 7" first press and red vinyl, and the War Zone 7"s on green and clear, my early Rev collection has moved up a notch in the last couple of months. The only area that still needs work is my yellow GB 7" collection, which is weak. If anyone happens to be looking to unload a light yellow or War Zone b-side label copy then hit me up.

4th and 12

It wasn't too long ago that I added two Sick Of It All 'S/T' 7"s to my collection. In fact, it was only last month. I picked up first and second press copies. Well, this brought me close to 'completion' on this record, so when I saw this fourth press copy on eBay UK, I figured it would be a good chance to take another step closer. I thought I had picked one of these up a few years ago, but the copy I got back then turned out to be a bootleg.

The funny thing about this one was that I got the eBay reminder on my phone as I walking towards the Mindset show a couple of weeks ago. By the time I got to the show there was about two minutes left. I paid into the show and then immediately put in a bid on this record with about 20 seconds to go... and won.

There's nothing particularly sexy about this pressing of the record. In many ways, this is the bog standard edition. Black vinyl, so stamps or numbering. Just 2000 copies on black vinyl. The Rev discography mentions that there are two different sleeves however, with one having catalogue and ordering info printed inside the sleeve. Mine, however, has nothing inside the sleeve.

What makes this pressing different from the previous is the cover - the photo is more zoomed in. Here it is next to the first press (first press on the left, fourth press on the right):

The reason I called this post '4th and 12' is simply because this fourth press copy is the 12th copy of this record in my collection. It would probably have been a good opportunity to take a collection photo, but on this occasion I simply couldn't be bothered. Sorry.

Tristessa

When I picked up the Soundgarden 'Room A Thousand Years Wide' 7", I also started thinking about what other Sub Pop releases I wanted that I didn't have. Not the BIG ones that would cost a small fortune, but just some of the releases that I used to want years back but thought were too expensive. One of them was the Smashing Pumpkins 7" on pink vinyl. And wouldn't you know it, I was able to go straight to discogs and grab one for what these days feels like a reasonable price.

I was never a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan back in the day, but I always wanted this 7". I always wanted to own the Sub Pop 7"s that were by the 'bigger' bands that weren't really on the label. Sub Pop used to get bands from other labels to do a 7" as part of their singles club. I picked up a few over the years, but this one always seemed too expensive to go after. But, as with a lot of the Sub Pop catalogue, the prices haven't moved in years. So it's now affordable.

Unfortunately this wasn't even on my wants list, so I can't cross it off. It was on the secondary wants list that exists only in my head... aong with loads of other stuff. One day I will get around to adding them to my actual real life wants list.

Metal Circus

So I started collecting colour vinyl Hüsker Dü records a couple of years ago. When I started out, the one I wanted the most was the 'Metal Circus' EP. The opening song on this record is 'Real World', which the 15 year old me fell in love with when I first heard it featured in Jason Lee's section in 'Video Days', which was the first Blind Skateboards video. It was the second song in Jason Lee's section, and I loved how noisy and raw it sounded. To me, it was the perfect soundtrack to the skating.

I borrowed a Hüsker Dü album a couple of years later, but the mistake I made was that I borrowed one of their later albums, which was much softer and more melodic than the noisy, hardcore sound of 'Real World' EP. Well, I know that now, but back then I had no clue and just assumed that 'Real World' was an anomaly and the band was dull. So I'm glad I gave them a second chance later in life and realised the error in my 17 year old judgement.

I knew this came on grey vinyl, and it has proved quite a tough find. The only thing that is slightly annoying is that I have no idea what the deal is with this record. I'm not sure if this was a 90s SST colour vinyl press, or a recent repress from some point in the last 3 or 4 years. I literally have no clue whatsoever. If I had to guess I would say it was made in the last few years because it looks and feels too new to be 20 years old. Plus it doesn't have the 90s 'color vinyl' sticker on the shrink. So I'm guessing at a 2011 ish repress. But it really is just a guess. Anyone know for sure?

Mindset Sunday

So last Sunday I got off my arse and went to a show. It's not often I can be bothered these days, but the line up was looking too good to ignore. Check the flyer:

The show was pretty cool. I was hesitant at first as I was sick with the flu and had pretty much lost my voice, and also I was worried that I would feel old. But it turned out pretty cool. A decent spread of ages, and I saw a few people I knew to chat to, plus I met a couple of people I'd never met before, including Ev from React! Records. All in all a good day. And of course, there were records on sale...

The first record that I picked up was the debut 7" from Arms Race, which is a newish UK band featuring dudes from other bands. The blue wax had sold out, so I grabbed the black copy.

I wish I could tell you what this sounds like, but I've had a busy week and not had the chance to listen to it yet.

I also found a second press, pink vinyl copy of the debut LP by The Flex. I missed this last year when it came out. I think the band's three week US tour with Violent Reaction probably helped build the hype.

The only other thing I grabbed was this green vinyl Integrity 'VValpurgisnacht' 7".

This was the third variant of the fifth pressing that I was missing. Here are the three together - green, glow in the dark and clear.

The only disappointment of the night was that Praise didn't have the tour copies of their LP left. But they were awesome live. Their LP is still in heavy rotation and I'm really glad that I made the effort to go see them despite feeling like shit.

Year Of The Wants List

Seventeen days into 2015 and I'm finally getting around to kicking off the year's blogging campaign. There was a thread on the Rev Collectors board about wants lists for 2015, and it got me to looking at my wants list, trying to figure out what I should try to pick up this year as a priority (if I get chance that is), and I realised that a significant chunk of my list has been there for a few years. Some of them pop up quite regularly, but I never grab them because, most of the time, I'm waiting to get one at a cheap price, or because I have my eye on something else instead. As a result, my list rarely reduces. So I have made a decision that 2015 is going to be the year of the want list. I'm going to make a conscious effort to cross as many things off my want list as possible. I mean, let's be honest, most of the stuff on it isn't even that hard to find really.

With this new goal in mind, I went straight to discogs and eBay and started seeing if there was anything that I could bag right away. I found this Soundgarden Sub Pop 7". It's not overly rare - there are 5000 copies in total, but I wanted a purple one, of which there were 'only' 1500. I've watched many over the years and not bought them because I believed I would get one cheaper eventually. In the end I just decided to pay the going rate to cross it off the list.

Like a lot of Sub Pop releases, the price on this hasn't really moved at all in the past twenty years or so. It bobs up and down a little depending on who wants one in any particular week, but generally this thing is still trading hands at the price I first saw it for sale for back in the early 90s. Which of course means that, in real terms, it has got cheaper.

Fortunately, this copy still has the Sub Pop Singles Club form attached. I love that these things are attached to the sleeve rather than just inserted on a separate piece of paper. It really helps to emphasise the age and historic significance of the label and bands.

So that's one item off the wants list, and I'm just warming up. I don't really have a target for the year. It'll just be interesting to see what I can achieve with a bit of focus.

2014 - Done & Dusted

Ok, so another year is over. 2014 came and went in a blur. I bought a new house and got a new job, and throughout it all I carried on buying records. My record purchasing is a little different these days than it used to be. I have a friend in the US who buys stuff for me and ships it over en mass approximately once every three months. This means that I get records far less frequently, but when I get some, I get a huge delivery, which would skew the blog if I didn't break it into multiple posts. Back when I started this blog I used to post up records on the day I got them. If I'd have been doing it that way in 2014, I'd have made probably ten posts all year (being four or so large deliveries from my friend, plus a few bits I picked up domestically). So I have to break the deliveries into multiple posts to keep the blog active.

Before I get to the records, I thought I would look at my year's blogging activity. The following graphs shows the number of posts I did this year by month:

Ever since I started this thing back in 2008, I have always aimed for ten posts a month, which would give 120 for the year. Well, this year I managed to beat that, with a total for the year of 147 posts. The highest activity was in November, when I managed 30 posts. I was aiming for a post a day in order to get everything up by the end of the year, but I missed two days, so then had two days when I did two posts to make up for it. 30 posts in a month has never been seen before, and will probably never be seen again. But it was good to prove that I could do it if I wanted. Conversely, the lowest activity was in June, when I only managed 4 posts, but in my defence it was Summer, and I was moving house.

Interestingly, this year represents the year with the highest number of posts since I started this blog back in 2008. I graphed the number of blog posts by year to show the progress, and what it shows is that 2014 was (almost) off the chart compared to previous years:

I think that this year was partially helped because Vinyl Noize closed its doors. I always struggled to balance my time between the two blogs, so when Vinyl Noize died I was left with only this blog to amuse myself. My worst year was 2011, although I'm not sure why. I think I was really busy at work for half the year. I also remember back then thinking that this blog was a pain in the ass and considered packing it in. Funny to think that I have somehow kept it going to the end of 2014.

So after putting these two graphs together, I also decided to combine both and look back at prior years and compare the monthly posting profiles to see if they were similar. It's kinda silly trying to fit 7 years of blogging into one graph, but I had a go:

I'm not really sure this tells me anything to be honest. But I had fun putting together, and it looks kinda cool, so that's all that matters.

So anyway, on to the records themselves, and this year I added 264 to my collection. I went back through this blog and counted, and then put the numbers into a table.

Strictly speaking, this isn't a graph of when I bought these things, but when I blogged about them, which is slightly different. But at least it's consistent with previous years. As I would have expected, I picked up more 12"s than 7"s. I do prefer the 12" format to 7"s, but I suspect that a big driver of the numbers was Revelation's reissue policy (one every other day). The best bit, however, is that I didn't pick up any ten inches at all. They suck.

I also graphed the data from the table. Mainly just because I like graphs. As expected, it is exactly the same shape as the first graph, with the exception of September.

So, of these 264 records, what were the highlights? Well, in terms of new releases, I put together a list of my favourites. I felt like I bought quite a few new releases this year, although when it came to putting this post together I realised I didn't have many to choose from. But I did have more than ten, which made putting together a top ten slightly challenging. Here we go...

TOP 10 NEW RELEASES IN 2014

1. Bane 'Don't Wait Up' LP - a new (and final) Bane LP, and damn,, was it ever better than I (and everyone else) was expecting. What else was I going to pick as my number one?

2. Praise 'Lights Went Out' LP - this one started slow, but gets better and better with every listen, to the point where I get excited just thinking about it. Hopefully I will make it to see them play in London in a couple of weeks.

3. Angel Dust 'A.D.' LP. - this thing sneaked up on me, as I hated their 7" when it came out and thought this band was a joke. What a fool. This is one catchy as hell record.

4. Cold World 'How The Gods Chill' LP - the last LP was years ago and was a bit all over the place, but this one is almost perfect. So good.

5. Stone Dagger 7" - I'm not sure why I like this exactly. I mean, it's like 80s metal. But damn, it's good, and played by Boston straight edge dudes so there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

6. Adult Crash 'Unfinished Business' 12" - this one seemed to pass a lot of people by. Features some older San Diego dudes playing 5 songs that sounds like a mix of Septic Death and SSD.

7. Violent Reaction 'Dead End' 7" - A relatively quiet year for Violent Reaction on the releases front, but this 7" continued in the same vein as their LP last year and got a lot of play from me. The only problem was that it is too short.

8. Code Orange 'I Am King' LP - this is surely going to be in a lot of peoples' lists for the year. A total buzz record. I saw so many pics of this on instagram that I decided to see what all the fuss was about... and then realised what all the fuss was about.

9. Protester 7" - a new hardcore band from DC, this thing rips from start to finish. Now signed to Triple B, it'll be interesting to see what they do next year.

10. Step Forward 7" - at first I thought this was kinda weak compared to the first 7", but I was wrong. This rules. I'm already looking forward to the next release in 2022.

There were also some other releases that should have been in the chart, but seeing as I still haven't received the vinyl yet I can't include them. Those are the rules I'm afraid. So my other favourite releases from this year that didn't make it based on a technicality are as follows:

TOP PICK UPS IN 2014

Once again, 2014 was a strong year for crossing wants off the list. Here's a pic showing my favourites.

A couple of these things I thought I would never find or own. Funnily enough, most of these seem to be on green vinyl.

1. War Zone 'Lower East Side Crew' 7" on clear vinyl and green vinyl - I got these in a trade for another War Zone 7". This is without doubt my favourite trade of all time, and the best records I picked up this year.

2. Dinosaur Jr 'You're Living All Over Me' LP on Green vinyl - I'd never even seen this before, but knew it existed. I was stoked beyond belief to get one.

3. Soundgarden 'Louder Than Love' LP on Green vinyl - THE rarest Soundgarden record, and possibly their best album.

4. Brotherhood 'Words Run As Thick As Blood' LP on Solid Green vinyl - in a year that saw Brotherhood's catalogue get reissued, it was cool to pick up the rarest variant of their original LP.

5. Insted 'Bonds Of Friendship' LP on White vinyl - this had been on my wants list for years and I felt like I would never own one. So it was good to bag one at a reasonable price.

6. S.O.A. 7" on Green vinyl - another long time want that I thought I would never own, and the condition of my copy is exceptional.

7. Descendents 'Cool To Be You' LP on Blue vinyl - by far the rarest and most valuable Descendents record, I badly needed this to complete my colour vinyl Descendents LP collection... and then when I got it I realised that I was missing a purple copy of 'ALL'.

OTHER STUFF I LISTENED TO A LOT

Quite often I download other stuff to listen to that I don't own, or I listen to stuff that came out ages ago. So this stuff can't make my list of the best releases. But it deserves a mention, because I spent a lot of time listening to it. Here's a list of stuff I listened to a lot in 2014:

Electric Flower Circus

So it would seem that there is just time for one last post in 2014 before the clock resets and it all starts again.

Just like the Supertouch live LP that I posted a few days ago, this post has taken me a lot longer to get around to than it should have due to the difficulty of getting some half decent pictures. Lack of light is a constant issue at this time of year. In the end I had to use a different background just to get this post done.

When Give put their 'Electric Flower Circus' LP up for pre-order a couple of months ago, I messed up. I imssed out on the colour vinyl copies, which sold out in a day or so. But then it was announced that a European label was also releasing it, so I made sure to get on the case quicksmart. Adagio 830 was extremely efficient and had these things mailed out to people across the world within two weeks.

The cool thing about this European press is that it has a different cover to the US version. I love this cover. So simple, yet looks so good. There were 100 copies on green and 400 on black. I got the green. It's pretty dark and I struggled to get it to show up in the pics.

I grabbed a second copy of this one for trade purposes as the US colour vinyl was sold out. If anyone gets an extra US copy and wants to trade for one of these then get in touch.
